Simon says: DEC! update - Spring term 2022

Rok is proud to be an industry adopter and sponsor of the Design Engineer Construct! (DEC) course in Jersey.

From the teacher's desk - DEC! teacher at Hautlieu School, Simon Forestiero's LinkedIn posts from January - April 2022 provides an insight into some of the unique and powerful learning experiences benefiting Jersey's students:

1. Jersey Construction Council Awards: Chairman mentioned the success of the DEC! programme in nurturing home-grown future talent, with over 400 students enrolled in the course across the island's five secondary schools

2. Classroom visit: DEC! students began their sun path analysis under the guidance of Leonardo Ali (Architect at Llewelyn Davies) and, from the engineering firm Arup, Tom Slater (Principal Sustainability Consultant) and Steven Burrows (Senior Building Physics Engineer)

3. Post work placement with industry adopter: DEC! students explain Gantt charts to the rest of the class, after learning about it on recent work placement at OHP

4. Accolade: Simon nominated Teacher of the Year at Digital Jersey Awards 2021

5. Classroom visit: Ruben Vivanco, Building Information Management (BIM) Coordinator at ROKFCC JV, showed DEC! students how BIM tools offer a dynamic, on-the-fly ability to assess and adapt building design and performance

6. Jersey Chamber of Commerce Lunch Briefing on Our Hospital Project: Simon and his two DEC! students attended as special guests of RoKFCC JV, and were able to see the commercial and political aspects of infrastructure construction projects

7. Classroom visit: Yenni Kusumo, Communications Director at OHP, explained the importance and elements of effective verbal and visual communication, ahead of the student's own presentations of their projects in the coming weeks
