From work experience to apprenticeship

Former De La Salle student, Oliver Young, joined Our Hospital Project (OHP), for work experience in the summer of 2021. During his two-week placement, Oliver, got to know the team and the project, and became interested in the apprenticeship opportunities open to him via OHP, on which RokFCC JV is the Design & Delivery Partner. 

Oliver applied for the Level 3 Apprenticeship and extended his work experience up until his apprenticeship with OHP and studies at Highlands College began in September 2021.

A year on, Oliver is now about to embark on his Level 4 Apprenticeship, studying Construction Management, and reflects on his apprenticeship journey thus far: "As an apprentice, my main aim is to gain a thorough understanding of the all the aspects of construction - from the project concept stage all the way to the handing over of the keys to the client. The apprenticeship allows me to do just that - learning the academic side at college and then seeing how it works practically, on the job - both in the office and on site."

We asked Oliver what advice he had for other young people considering work experience or an apprenticeship with OHP: "I would encourage them to take on any task with an open mind, even if it's slightly out of your comfort zone. I found that by having a good attitude and being open to doing even the small tasks well, I was able to earn trust and gain experience enough to be considered for bigger tasks and greater responsibilities."

Oliver has certainly integrated himself within the team well and taken part in several OHP social value initiatives such as supporting work experience students, volunteering on charity work and attending careers fairs.
